Mixed Martial Arts, you hear the term all of the time, but what does it actually mean?
For many the UFC IS Mixed Martial Arts. In reality, the UFC has become the main vehicle of both exposing martial arts to many who have never witnessed real combat in a style vs style combat sport environment, and at the same time, the caldron in which Mixed Martial Arts of the 21st Century have and will continue to change and evolve.
This of course, is not really the beginning of MMA. Many historians will assert that MMA began in ancient Greece. In 648 BC, the “sport” of Pankration was added to the 33rd Olympiad. It basically allowed all techniques with the exception of eye goughing.
No gloves were worn and punching, kicking and wrestling were all used. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Ancient mixed martial arts, eh?
Now, we have come full-circle. Instead of styles separating one martial artist from another, elements of each style are incorporated. In today’s MMA-style competitions, one can not afford to be deficient in any aspect of MMA, as that will quickly be exploited by your opponent.
